CVE-2026-33096: Anthropic AI Chains Chrome, Windows RCE Exploits

TL;DR CRITICAL
  • What happened: Anthropic's unreleased AI autonomously chained zero-days into working RCE exploits across Chrome, Windows, and Linux.
  • Who's at risk: Users of Chrome, Safari, Android, Windows HTTP/3 servers, and Linux multipath TCP servers are most exposed, though all reported flaws are now patched.
  • Act now: Update Chrome to version 156 or later immediately · Apply iOS/iPadOS 26.5.2 and all April/October 2026 OS patches for Windows and Linux · Audit internal AI red-team policies to account for autonomous exploit-generation capability
CVE-2026-33096: Anthropic AI Chains Chrome, Windows RCE Exploits

Overview

An unreleased Anthropic AI model has demonstrated the ability to autonomously discover vulnerabilities across multiple platforms and chain them into working proof-of-concept exploits — a capability previously confined to a small number of elite human offensive security teams. Reported by Anthropic’s Frontier Red Team, the model produced five complete exploit chains targeting Chrome, Safari, Android, Windows, and Linux, all developed in a controlled lab environment and disclosed responsibly to affected vendors before publication.

All identified flaws have been patched. However, the demonstrated capability raises urgent questions about the near-term offensive potential of frontier AI models.

Technical Analysis

The most complex chain targeted Chrome on macOS. The model chained four distinct vulnerabilities:

  1. V8 memory corruption — A malicious web page corrupted memory in Chrome’s JavaScript engine.
  2. V8 sandbox escape — A second flaw broke out of V8’s memory isolation to control the renderer process.
  3. CacheStorage race condition — This exposed memory layout of the more privileged browser process.
  4. FedCM use-after-free — A final bug in Chrome’s sign-in subsystem enabled full out-of-sandbox code execution.

The result: visiting a single page opened the Calculator app on a stock Mac running Chrome — no additional user interaction required.

The Linux chain (CVE-2026-98432) achieved unauthenticated root-level remote code execution against servers running a multipath TCP listener. The Windows chain (CVE-2026-33096) enabled repeated network-based denial of service against HTTP/3-capable servers. The Safari chain allowed cross-origin data theft from a single page visit, and the Android chain exfiltrated photos from a locked device over USB.

Across all Chrome-related findings, Anthropic reported 62 CVE-grade vulnerabilities to Google, including 13 sandbox escapes, all rated critical or high, fixed in Chrome 156.

Transparency caveat: Anthropic does not detail the exact division of labour between the model and human operators, stating only that work required “initial prompting” and “little human involvement.” The model itself remains unnamed and unreleased.

Framework Mapping

  • AML.T0047 (AI-Enabled Product or Service): The model functions as an autonomous offensive security tool, directly producing weaponisable exploit chains.
  • AML.T0043 (Craft Adversarial Data): The model constructed payloads designed to exploit specific memory-safety flaws.
  • AML.T0065 (LLM Prompt Crafting): Operator prompting was the primary mechanism for directing the model’s vulnerability research.
  • LLM08 (Excessive Agency): The model exercised significant autonomous decision-making across a multi-stage offensive workflow with limited human checkpoints.
  • LLM02 (Insecure Output Handling): The model’s outputs were directly executable exploit code, underscoring risks of AI systems generating high-consequence artefacts.

Impact Assessment

All five exploit chains have been patched. However, the strategic implications are severe:

  • Democratisation of elite exploit development: AI models capable of chaining n-day and zero-day vulnerabilities could lower the barrier for less sophisticated threat actors to produce advanced exploits.
  • Velocity risk: If a similar model were used offensively, patch windows could be compressed dramatically.
  • Disclosure model under pressure: Responsible disclosure worked here; adversarial use would bypass it entirely.

Mitigation & Recommendations

  1. Patch immediately: Apply Chrome 156+, iOS/iPadOS 26.5.2, and all April and October 2026 patches for Windows and Linux systems.
  2. Restrict HTTP/3 exposure: If CVE-2026-33096 applies to your environment, verify patch status and consider disabling HTTP/3 on unpatched servers.
  3. Disable multipath TCP listeners on Linux hosts pending confirmation of CVE-2026-98432 patch deployment.
  4. Review AI red-team governance: Security organisations should update threat models to include AI-assisted exploit chain generation as a credible near-term adversary capability.
  5. Monitor vendor advisories: Follow Chrome, Apple, Google Android, and Linux kernel security bulletins closely given the accelerated discovery cadence this capability implies.
