Microsoft’s August 2026 update meaningfully extends managed detection and response coverage beyond Microsoft-native signals, addressing a persistent blind spot for organisations that operate mixed-vendor environments. For security teams that have relied on Defender Experts for around-the-clock protection, the ability to include third-party telemetry under the same managed umbrella removes a coverage seam that adversaries have historically been able to exploit.
Capability Overview
Two capabilities headline this release. First, Microsoft Defender Experts MDR (Managed Detection and Response) now ingests and hunts across third-party data sources connected through Microsoft Sentinel — specifically citing Palo Alto Networks, Amazon Web Services, and Okta as supported sources. Previously, Defender Experts MDR coverage was effectively bounded by Microsoft-native telemetry; third-party signals could be ingested into Sentinel but were not covered by the around-the-clock expert-led hunting and response that MDR customers receive. This extension is available at the P2 tier.
Second, Microsoft Entra Tenant Governance introduces a unified view across an organisation’s tenants, with centralised policy management, cross-tenant delegated administration, and a configuration drift report that surfaces changes to identity policies with type, property, and timestamp detail. This targets the multi-tenant enterprise architecture challenge — particularly relevant as organisations expand AI-powered operations across business units or subsidiaries that each maintain distinct Entra tenants. The drift report enables continuous monitoring rather than point-in-time audits, which is a meaningful operational step forward.
Defensive Advances
Extended MDR coverage across vendor boundaries. Security teams can now have expert-led threat hunting applied to Palo Alto firewall logs, AWS CloudTrail, and Okta identity events alongside Microsoft signals — all within a single managed service engagement. This eliminates the need to maintain separate MDR contracts or hope that cross-source correlation happens organically in a SIEM.
Proactive identity drift detection. The Entra Tenant Governance drift report gives security and identity teams a continuous signal when tenant configurations deviate from established baselines. Previously, detecting that a Conditional Access policy had been quietly modified across a subsidiary tenant required manual comparison or custom logic. This is now surfaced as an auditable record.
Shadow tenant risk reduction. Centralised multi-tenant administration reduces the likelihood of ungoverned or under-monitored tenants accumulating misconfiguration debt — a real risk as AI agent deployments create new service principals, application registrations, and delegated permissions at scale.
Residual Gaps
P2 licensing is a prerequisite. The third-party MDR coverage is gated behind the Defender Experts MDR P2 tier, which means organisations on P1 or running Defender Experts Threat Intelligence only will not automatically inherit this benefit. Budget and licensing planning cycles may delay adoption.
Sentinel ingestion maturity varies. The quality of MDR coverage across third-party sources is directly dependent on the fidelity and completeness of the underlying Sentinel data connectors. Organisations with partially configured or inconsistently normalised connectors may find that expert hunting over those sources yields lower-quality detections than over native Microsoft telemetry.
Tenant Governance rollout complexity. In large enterprise environments with dozens of tenants, onboarding all tenants into Entra Tenant Governance and establishing meaningful drift baselines requires upfront investment. Organisations without mature identity governance processes may find the drift report surfaces noise before it surfaces signal.
AI agent-specific coverage not yet explicit. While the framing references AI-powered operations and agent activity, neither capability explicitly describes detection logic tuned for AI agent behaviours — such as anomalous tool invocations, unexpected service principal creations, or agent-driven permission escalations. Coverage in this area appears to remain dependent on how well underlying connectors and detection rules are configured.

Organisations should treat this release as two parallel workstreams. For MDR expansion, begin by auditing existing Sentinel data connectors — particularly Palo Alto, AWS, and Okta — to confirm ingestion completeness and normalisation quality before engaging Microsoft on P2 coverage scope. Gaps in connector fidelity will constrain hunting effectiveness. For Tenant Governance, start with a pilot subset of tenants to establish what a clean baseline looks like, then define drift thresholds before scaling. Coordinate with identity and IAM teams, not just the SOC, as many drift signals will require identity team remediation rather than security response.
